Make an easy sew DIY star ornament

striped star ornamentAn easy sew DIY star ornament tutorial using stamps, scrap fabric and embellishments from your craft stash.  Handmade ornaments are a great beginner project too.  The charming striped material combines with a little bling to create a sweet ornament for your holiday tree.  You can make a trio and give as a gift or make a bunch and use them as package toppers for your christmas gifts.  They are also fun for an ornament swap.

Materials for easy sew DIY star ornament:

  • Fabric, scraps: red/white striped, text, plain muslin
  • Fairfield Poly-fil Fiberfill Stuffing
  • Kreinik 005 Black #16 Medium Braid
  • Thread: black, white
  • Jute, 8” length
  • Embellishments: gem flowers, two; flat-backed rhinestone; holiday sprig with berries

Tools for a handmade star ornament:

  • Lowercase alphabet stamp set
  • Black pigment ink
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Wire cutters
  • Adhesives: Beacon AdhesivesFabri-Tac Permanent Adhesive, fusible webbing

Directions for a handmade easy sew DIY star ornament

  1. Access pattern by selecting the info button near the main image, then select the pattern icon. Download and print pattern. Transfer two star shapes to wrong side of striped fabric; cut out.
  2. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse webbing to text and muslin scraps using iron. Draw 2-1/2” circle on paper side of fused text fabric; cut out. Draw 2”- circle on paper side of fused plain muslin fabric; cut out.
  3. On firm surface, stamp “believe” on plain muslin circle; heat set with iron.
  4. Peel paper backing from circles. Fuse text circle to center of right side of one star. Fuse stamped circle to center of text circle.
  5. Couch Black braid to outer edges of both circles using black thread, overlapping braid ends 1/4”. (Note: Ends can be secured with tiny dot of fabric glue.)
  6. Place right sides of star together. Using 1/4” seam allowance, machine-sew edges together, leaving 2-1/2” opening for turning. Turn right side out. Lightly stuff with fiberfill stuffing. Whipstitch opening closed using needle and white thread. Knot ends.
  7. Trim holiday sprig to 3” length using wire cutters. Couch sprig to star using white thread. Knot ends.
  8. Adhere gems to star using fabric glue. Let dry.
  9. Loop jute twine; hand-sew to back of star using white thread to hang.
