Holiday home tour and Monogram Door Hanging tutorial

Country Chic Monogram Wreath Monogram Door Hanger. Twine or sisal wrapped around a wreath, letter or frame is a great idea for your next DIY craft. Holiday door decoration inspiration.
We have been in our new house for almost 6 months now.  Fairhaven Lane is growing on us as we make this house our home.  Our last home had a covered porch that was very fun to decorate.  Fairhaven Lane has a grand entrance and making my old decorations work is a little challenging.  Everything seems so small.  Layering and adding multiple pieces will be the key to making this entrance welcoming.  The first thing I added was the topiary tree on each side of the door.  It was still empty looking so I added the monogram door hanging.  The tutorial for the Monogram Door Hanger is below.  I know the entrance needs more.  Now to figure out what it needs.  I am so open for ideas.  Feel free to leave some suggestions below.

Herb flavored vinegar recipe

herb infused vinegars. infused vinegar 2 Herb flavored vinegar recipe

The herb flavored vinegar recipe is easy to make and makes a great gift to give.  If you have a foodie in your family they will love these herb infused vinegars.  If you plan on making these for Christmas or as Hostess gifts during the upcoming festive season make them two weeks in advance to allow the flavors to infuse.  Make a delicious vinegar infused with the scent and flavor of fresh rosemary and other spice ingredients by following the instructions below.  I made these in less than 15 minutes.  I also found the bottles at the thrift store for .15 a piece.  I would have purchased a dozen more if I could.  These little bottles are the perfect size for this gift. If you are crafty you can embellish them with ribbons or jute.

Tools and supplies to make the herb flavored vinegar:

  • Rosemary sprigs
  • Crushed red chili pepper
  • Funnel
  • Corks
  • Bottles
  • Instructions to make the herb flavored vinegar:

    1.  Clean and sterilize bottles.
    2.  Slip rosemary sprigs into each bottle. I added sliced garlic cloves to one and crushed red peppers to the other.  Use a funnel to pour in vinegar. Add the cork.
    3.  After filling and corking bottles, wash and dry them well.
    4.  Apply label to front of bottle.
    5.  Wrap twine around the neck of the bottle.  Tie in place and hot glue on a button.

To prolong the life of the oil, refrigerate bottles. The Garlic and Rosemary should be used within a month of making. If you are using fresh herbs and spices make sure you wash and dry them.  If you are using dried spices the shelf life is 3 months.   I add a label on the back of each bottle so the recipient knows what they are getting.

ultimate veggie soup mix in a jar

ultimate veggie soup mix in a jar

Ultimate veggie soup mix in a jar is really awesome or I could not call it the Ultimate Veggie Soup.  What makes it so awesome is the secret ingredient – that will not be secret for long. It is the dried mushrooms.  They really add an extra element of taste and blend all the flavors together. The ultimate veggie soup mix makes a great pantry staple or as a gift in a jar to give. I love the way the layers look because they are so colorful and pretty. Hearty soups are wonderful on a cold day. You can also add meat to the soup and make it a meal.

Ultimate Handmade Christmas Gift from the Kitchen

The ultimate Christmas Gift from the kitchen 2Not only does this Handmade Christmas gift have a super cool spoon with Wood Burning and it is wrapped in a useful kitchen towel but the Handmade Christmas gift that is inside is pretty awesome too.  This was the drawing on the spoon.  I know my finished version looks nothing like the drawing.  And if you look really closely you can see I gave my owl an extra claw on the finished spoon.  They only have three.  I should have paid a little more attention to the original drawing.  LOL

The Ultimate Christmas Gift from the Kitchen

This gift set is for a friend who is newly single and now lives alone.  I included a Mexican Rice soup single, seasoned crackers and Tex Mex Taco Mix.  This particular friend loves Mexican and is just learning how to cook for one.    The kitchen towel, trivet and spoon can be used long after the food is consumed.

The Cracker seasoning recipe can be found here ->  Zesty Ranch Crackers  They make a great handmade gift all by themselves.

The Tex Mex Taco mix recipe:

  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 4 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried onions
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground thyme
  • 1/4-1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Mix all the ingredients together and add to the jelly jar or a zip top bag.  When I am making the mix I multiply the ingredients by 4 and save for use later.    I used the same mix in the  Mexican Rice soup single.   The mix can be added to ground beef or chicken.  It can be used a base for chili or as a dip too.

To make the Mexican Rice soup single.

  • 2 tablespoons of rice
  • 1 tablespoon of dried vegetables
  • 1 teaspoon Tex Mex Seasoning Mix
  • 1 chicken bouillon cube

Directions to make the soup – add 3 cups water to a pan and add the ingredients of the soup single bring to a boil. Cover and let simmer for 20 minutes.  If you like more broth you can add another 1/2 cup of water.

Zesty Ranch Crackers

Ranch Crackers 2 in a jar with wood burn pyrography spoon

Zesty Ranch Crackers are one of the things my family considers a staple in the pantry.  I do not keep much “junk food” in the house and this is as close to it as we really get.  These crackers kick up tomato soup and make salads perfect.  But who am I kidding we have been known to have a handful as a snack too.  The pyrography spoon  was made using this WOOD BURNING technique.  I made 8 in a little over an hour and had a ton of fun doing it.  Be prepared to see a lot more of it over the next few months.  I bought more spoons and wood tags to play with too.  I drew the flower by hand and then applied the wood burning tool.

Zesty Ranch Crackers Mix:

2 Tbsp powdered buttermilk
2 Tbsp dried parsley
1 1/2 tsp dried dill
1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp dried basil
1/4 tsp pepper
1/4 teaspoon lemon pepper
1/4 cup vegetable oil
( 1/4 -1/2 tsp salt optional)
5 cups oyster crackers  ( a standard bag from the store)

Add each of the dried spices to a bowl and mix.

  • Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C).
    2. In a large bowl, combine the dressing mix, dill weed, vegetable oil, lemon pepper, and garlic powder. Add oyster crackers, and toss to coat. Spread evenly on a baking sheet.
    3. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes in the preheated oven, stirring gently after 10 minutes. Remove from oven, and allow to cool before serving.

To decorate the jar you will need:

Instructions – Add a drop of hot glue to the lid and wrap the twine around and add a little hot glue as you go along. Add the label to the top of the jar and then add the lid back on top of the jar. Wrap and additional string around the jar and tie on the spoon.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Craft

Ugly Sweater Inspired Hostes Gift Ugly Christmas Sweater Craft

Ah yes it is that time of year again, the ugly Christmas sweater themed party season.   The formerly fashionable attire would still be nothing more than a long-forgotten piece of bad taste without the ugly Christmas sweater party.   It is the perfect excuse for some bad 80’s hair and letting your inner kindergarten teacher out.

The Ugly Sweater theme parties have not only given new life to old pieces of holiday monstrosity, they have made them quite trendy and exceptionally fun as well.  If you are attending a holiday ugly sweater party celebrating the most awful pieces of knitting in town you might want to consider a hostess gift.  This Ugly Christmas Sweater Craft frame can be displayed seasonally or year round as a reminder of the fun festivities.   Textured ribbon, plastic deer and pom poms are totally tacky to me.  SO I thought they would be perfect for the frame. You could use any tacky embellishment to make your Ugly Christmas Sweater Craft frame.  I am still not sure why I had these little embellishments in my crafty stash.  Maybe I am totally tacky at heart.  😉

Tools and Supplies for the Ugly Christmas Sweater Craft :

2. Adhere ribbon with a line of hot glue.

3. Adhere tacky plastic reindeer with hot glue.

4. Glue pom pom balls in bucket and adhere to frame with a dollop of hot glue.

When I got an email from Thoughts From Alice asking if I’d like to participate in the Holiday Thrift Store Challenge, I didn’t hesitate to say, Yes!   I love thrifting and a challenge. We were asked us to venture out to our local thrift store and procure  anything for under $25 to use as holiday decor in a creative way. We could give these items a complete makeover or use it/them in a creative vignette.  To see beyond the surface of what someone discarded or no longer needed and think outside the box. She wanted us to show you, our readers, how to save money on holiday decor by using a little creativity. When I told my mother the plans she was all over the idea.

Pretty soon I am going to have to set her up as a contributor to the web site.  This is her 5th and 6th project in the last month.  She made a video the other day Duck Tape Candy Cane Inspired Wreath,   She is totally smitten with the Chalky Paint from DecoArt and used it on the metal frame and the glass jar. The DIY Shabby Chic Picture Frame is supposed to be a gift for my little sister but we will see where it ends up.  (I have a feeling it will be in my mom’s bedroom.)   The item was found at the thrift store.  She paid $.29 a piece for it.  She loves to go to the thrift store, especially on Monday.  The store closest to our house has half price on almost everything that day.
