Sewing kit in a Jar

Sewing Kit in a jar gift

A Sewing Kit in a Jar is a great gift for a beginner sewer or crafter.  I think it is also a great gift for graduation.   It is a compact place  and you can add to it as you need.   Plus if you make the to a pin cushion it works double duty.  I personally love  having multiple pin cushions so I hope I can pass my love on to the recipient.   I also like to have my needles separate from my straight pins so I keep them on a loop that hangs on the side.

For the contents of the kit I included:

  • measuring tape
  • needle
  • threads
  • buttons
  • needle threader
  • straight pins
  • tiny scissors
  • thimble

mason jar pincushion
Supplies for Mason Jar with Pincushion top:

For this pincushion I chose to use a wide mouth half pint jar because I needed it to be able to hold everything.

Instructions for pincushion sewing kit jar:mason jar pincushion

1.  Cut fabric to at least 7″ x 7″ and press.

fiber fill pin cushion top

2.  Add a large ball of Polyfil to the center of the fabric.

hot gel the edges

3.  Hot glue the edges to the center.

4.  Using a hot glue gun, lay a bead of glue under the gathered edge of fabric.  Press as flat as you can.  It is important that you really get these gathers as flat as possible.  If they are too bulky it will make it challenging to get the jar completely closed.  Trim off excess fabric.

pincushion mason jar top

5.  Cut a length of ribbon to about 6″.  Glue ends together and glue to the lid of the jar.   Press the pincushion lid into the ring, making sure the needle holder ribbon is pulled through to the top.

6.  Hot Glue it to the rim of the jar.

7.  Add a drop of glue to the needle ribbon.

These are so easy and quick and they make great stocking stuffers too.  If you want even more inspiration click on the image below and  get in on the gift giving in a jar excitement.

Nutella cake bars

Nutella Cake Bar with marshmallowNutella cake bars are absolutely delicious.  We added them to our cake bar repertoire a few years ago.  This version also has marshmallow fluff added.   When we concoct  in the kitchen ( that is what my son calls it when we make things up)  you never know how it is going to turn out.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20-25 minutes
Recipe-yield: 36 bars*
*If you are a Nutella nut, they make about 20 bars

Cake bars filled with Nutella and Marshmallow Cream. These will disappear every time you make them.ingredients for nutella cake bars

Ingredients for Nutella Cake Bars:

  • 1 yellow cake mix*
  • 1/3 cup butter, melted* ( if you use unsalted – add a pinch of salt)
  • 1/3 cup milk*
  • 6-8 oz Nutella
  • 7-8 oz Marshmallow Cream
  • 9×13 baking dish
  • non-stick spray
  • rubber spoon or spatula
  • Sprinkles optional – we used halloween colors
*These items make the base of my bar cakes.  You can add 6-16 ounces of almost any type of filling to change the flavor.  We like nutella and peanut butter.  Peanut butter and chocolate chips.  You can also add nuts.

Instructions for Nutella Cake Bars:

Combine cake mix, melted butter, and milk in a mixing bowl. The dough should be sticky.  Press half the batter in a greased 9×13 pan. Spray your spoon with non stick spray to help keep it from sticking.

  1. Spread the Nutella on top of the dough. nutella on cake base

Thirteen No Sew Pumpkin Ideas

Fresh pumpkins are always fun but they can be kind of pain because they eventually start to do what most fresh things do when pulled from the ground: rot. Take a different approach to decorating with pumpkins this year and try out one {or more} of these thirteen no sew pumpkin ideas. The pumpkins will keep for years to come and you won’t even have to bother breaking out the sewing machine.

I definitely want to try a few of these 13 No Sew Pumpkin ideas. So many great ideas.

Chevron Tape Table Tutorial

chalk paint table frog tape shape tape diy Chevron Tape Table Tutorial Chevron Tape Table Tutorial came about because my kitchen table and chairs were very worn and in desperate need of a make over.  The chevron tape I used is called Chevron Shape Tape by FrogTape.  It is really versatile and easy to use.  I hope you are inspired by what I did on my table top.   The table and chairs were about 10 years old and are on there 3rd house.  The moves, everyday use and two kids have not been kind to them.  They looked fine from a distance.  However, up close was not so nice.  The protective  finish had long been scrubbed off and when you cleaned it after a meal a black layer of paint came off.   I decided it was time to give it a new life.

Crazy me decided to add a little more cray cray tony life and HAD to paint it BEFORE we put the house on the market.  I could not have strangers coming into my home thinking we ate off such a craptstic table.  In reality we did, but in my need to have the elusive “perfect” house for showing I painted it during the de-cluttering process.  I do not recommend this for any normal sane person.  Alas, I do not fall into that category.  You will notice in the step out photos that I painted it in place and the chairs right on top of the table.
I DO NOT recommend this.
I was not worried about the table surface while painting because it was next on the list.  I am a very neat and tidy painter who should have covered the floor under the table.  There could have been spills or drops.  Luckily for me there were not any.  Don’t roll the dice like I did.  Cover your work area.

Supplies for Chevron Tape Table and chairs:

chair before chalk paint

Instructions for Chevron Tape Table and chairs:

  1. Sand any rough spots.  Wipe down every surface to remove any dust, dirt  or grease and grime.  No prep work is needed other than cleaning.
  2. When painting chairs I like to start in the corners and edges. And I work from the top down.

chalky paint chair during3.  If you get any lumps or bumps you can sand them out after it is dry.  I used two coats of paint to get a solid look.  I went back and distressed after the whole piece was finished.

4.  I use sand paper, and a damp cloth to create soft worn areas. I love the way the black peaks out too.

6. The base has two coats and I also wiped of the edges to allow the black to show through.

7.  I played around with the spacer piece that came with the shape tape. I decided to use a piece of the tape to space the stripes out.

8.  Apply the clear creme wax finish before you add the next color.

10.  The tape has two pieces to the back.  I secured one side and smoothed with a credit card and a spatula.  I use what ever was closest.  LOL

11. Cover the table completely.  Make sure you have the edges smoothed out completely.  No lumps or bumps.

12.  Cover the table surface completely.  Allow to dry according to manufacturers directions.

13.  Start removing the stripes.

14. Do not panic at this point and think you made a mistake. I almost did.

15. Make sure you have a rubbish bin near.  The removal is messy.

apply creamy wax to chevron chalky table

16. I added another coat of the clear creme wax.  I did this so I could control how the dark brown wax would go on.  It is easier to wipe off if you have this coat on in between the layers.

17.  Add the Dark Brown Creme Wax.  I have found it best to work in one direction.  I worked from left to right in long consistent strokes.

I like the distressed roughed up look.  If that look is not for you, then skip the sanding and do not wipe off paint between the layers.   I also added a layer of Matte Varnish for my sanity.  One more layer of protection could not hurt a thing with my sweet gentle children.  😉

DIY Button earrings

Teal Ice Button Earrings by Allie Gower

DIY Button earrings  can be very quick and easy to make with a few supplies.  They really do not take a long time or a complicated list of supplies.

Supplies for creating Button Earrings

Instructions for making button earrings:

  1. Open jump rings with pliers.
  2. Attach three buttons to 10mm jump rings through one of the holes.
  3. Attach three buttons on their rings to a small jump ring, and attach that to your pre-made earring wires. I used 7 mm rings for this step.

Tip – to open the  jump rings – don’t pull them apart, twist them… One side away from you and one side toward you.

The earrings were made by  Allie Gower for Buttons Galore and More and I loved them and wanted to share them with you here too.
